We all know that reading to kids is a great way to encourage early literacy and enjoy bonding time with a child. Here are a few of my favourite children’s books to share with your little one, or give as gifts to new parents.
Personally, I found it easier to read aloud shorter books with rhyming language when my kids were very little. And as they get older the rhyming nature helps them to remember the text and they can join in the reading too.
Sometimes I like to curl up in a ball, by Vicki Churchill
A sweet little rhyme book about things kids can do, and the fun that can be had. We were given a board book copy of this when our eldest was born, and it has been so well read and loved I think duct tape is all that is holding it together.
Where is the green sheep? by Mem Fox.
The mystery of where the green sheep is hiding. Along the way, we find all the bright and beautifully illustrated friends of the green sheep. Lots of things in the pictures to point to and talk about with little ones.
There’s a Bear on my Chair, by Ross Collins.
My kids loved the humour of this one. What will Mouse do when Bear won’t move off Mouse’s chair? This book also has an audio track you can access on the publisher’s website for when your voice needs a break, or you just need a few minutes to yourself.
Anything by Aaron Blabey, such as Thelma the Unicorn and Pig the Pug books.
Always a popular author in our house. Beautifully illustrated and funny stories. We have read countless Aaron Blabey children’s books over the years!
The Very Hungry Bear, by Nick Bland
A cute rhyming book about Bear’s quest for a fish dinner, that toddlers love. Nick Bland has a series of ‘Bear’ books that are well worth a look. Most are available as board books too.
Elephant & Piggie books, by Mo Williems.
A simple and fun series of books about 2 friends. Great early reading books, as you and your child can choose a character to read the dialogue for. An easy one for kids to memorise the text and ‘practise’ reading.
Jesus Storybook Bible, by Sally Lloyd-Jones
This book has such beautiful Illustrations by artist Jago! And it shares stories of the bible in an easy-to-understand way, and clearly shares how God has been working throughout time, and loves us. There are also animations of the book available to keep children entertained.
