History of MOPS in Australia

1986

  • The first MOPS group is formed in Melbourne. (Clayton Church of Christ)

1992

  • A second MOPS group forms in Canberra. (Westminster Presbyterian later transferred to Tuggeranong Presbyterian)

1994

  • MOPS expands as a third group is chartered in Ballarat. (Ballarat Family Church of Christ)

1997

  • February: Julie Prattis is appointed Australian Area Coordinator.
  • November: Carol Kuykendall, Vice President of Communications at MOPS International, visits Australia for a Family Ministries Seminar in Wollongong. Australian groups total 5.


1998

  • The chartering process through MOPS International is streamlined as permission is given to distribute charter materials locally. Time delays are reduced from four months to two weeks.
  • The first Australian regional training conferences are held in Toowoomba, Campbelltown and Melbourne. Groups expand to 18.

1999

  • Julie Prattis attends the MOPS International Convention and visits MOPS Headquarters in Denver. Initial permission is given to begin preparing for Affiliation.
  • January: Robyn Robertson becomes National Field Representative. Robyn promotes MOPS as she travels around Australia with her family.
  • July: Margaret Sanders becomes Australia’s first Regional Coordinator.
  • August: A National Committee of proposed Board members begins meeting.

2000

  • June: MOPS Australia incorporates and becomes the second MOPS International Affiliate.
  • Australia first National Conference is held in Heatherton VIC. Groups total 36.
  • October: MOPS is represented in every state and territory in Australia.

2001

  • Regional Coordinators are appointed to Victoria, NSW, Tasmania and Queensland. Groups total 55.

2002

  • July: Robyn Robertson becomes the National Director for Training and Promotion.
  • MOPS rose is released. A website is established. Conferences expand to include Western Australia. Groups total 85.
  • Dec: Julie Prattis resigns as National Director

2003

  • 18 Feb: MOPS Office officially opened at CREEDA Business Centre Wanniassa
  • Joan Gordon is appointed National Director.
  • MOPS Australia office moves to Clarinda, Victoria.
  • Number of groups operating in Australia total 97

2004

  • Australian Edition of MOPS Handbooks go on our website
  • Tasmania holds their first MOPS Conference.
  • Number of groups operating in Australia total 97

2005

  • Erma Mayes is appointed Regional Coordinator for South Australia
  • Australian edition of MOPS handbooks printed in booklet form.

2006

  • Second Field Staff Seminar held at Stanwell TOPS
  • National Director, Joan Gordon, attends MOPS International Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, USA.

2007

  • Julie Prattis records on DVD, ‘Story of MOPS Australia 1992 -2007’
  • MOPS Australia charters MOPS groups in Fiji. National Director visits Fiji.
  • ‘MOPS Plus’ introduced.

2008

  • Margaret Sanders appointed National Field Staff Leader.
  • MOPS Australia charters MOPS Groups in The Philippines and Papua New Guinea. National Director visits Philippines.
  • MOPS Australia charters the 200th group in Australia.
  • National Director, Joan Gordon and Board Chair, Julie Prattis, attend MOPS International Convention, Dallas, Texas.
  • Shelly Radic from MOPS Int is guest speaker at Field Staff Seminar and Queensland MOPS Conference on the Gold Coast.

2009

  • Cherie Macchiusi appointed Area Coordinator for WA, and NT
  • Jillian Ross appointed Area Coordinator for Queensland.
