Has anyone else discovered that with the birth of their baby (or maybe even during pregnancy) a switch somewhere deep inside was turned on? The switch has large flashing letters above it labelling it as “mum guilt”. After battling this beast for the early months of my daughter’s life, I thought I had it mostly conquered. This beast lulls me into a false sense of victory, lying dormant for stretches of time. Sometimes the whispers of guilt are so slight that I almost miss them. Other times, guilt is a roar.

Ever been tortured by ‘on hold music’? I was stuck on the phone waiting for my doctor’s receptionist to pick up last week. Talk about painful! They were severely failing their ‘Hippocratic Oath’ of ‘first, do no harm’ (to my ears!)… All I could do was grit my teeth, wait it out (and also move the phone a little further away from my ear!)

‘Strategic planning’ is a phrase that means precious little if you don’t move in governance or corporate circles, and truth be told it makes me quite nervous.
Nervousness aside it was the Board’s task at our recent Board meeting and Strategic planning weekend. Just like Buzz Lightyear with boldness and determination, we set our sights on what MOPS in Australia needs to look like into the future, and what we need to do in the short term to see that happen.

Mums desperately need time to hang out with other mums, to share and be encouraged. They also need to be given tools in order to become the best mums they can be.
If this was all we did at MOPS, we would be blessing many mums and consequently many families; we would indeed be changing lives.

“MOPS morning” is a new blog category. It is a chance for groups to share experiences and activities that have worked well in their groups.
Our first “MOPS morning” blog is from the Emerald MOPS group who began the year by speeding up the relationship building between the mums who came on their first day.

Each year the Board of MOPS Aust has opportunity to recognise the outstanding contribution of leaders by conferring MOPS Australia Awards.
The ‘Hand of MOPS Award’ is given to a leader who has contributed in an outstanding way at a local / regional level.
The ‘Spirit of MOPS Award’ is given to an organisation that has supported or promoted MOPS.
The ‘Heart of MOPS Award’, is arguably the most prestigious, being awarded to MOPS leaders whose leadership and contribution has been exemplary at a national level.

Many years ago when I first discovered MOPS, I was so pleased to find a ministry I could do with my child ‘in tow’. I didn’t have to wait till my daughter was in school to be involved in worthwhile and productive ministry! When I ‘graduated’ from MOPS I thought that was the end of my MOPS ministry. But I was wrong. The following year, with no new MOPPETS leader in sight, our Coordinator asked me if I would consider giving MOPS one more year.

Over my years in MOPS leadership a particular issue has arisen now and again, but in the last couple of months, it has come up too often for my comfort.
How do Christian women, not on our MOPS teams but in our MOPS groups, perceive MOPS?
How do young Christian mums in our MOPS churches, who don’t attend MOPS, perceive MOPS?
