Types of MOPS Groups
1. Classic MOPS
MOPS Australia is dedicated to encouraging, equipping and developing every mother of preschoolers. MOPS strives to attain this vision through the local MOPS group. A Classic MOPS group is chartered through a local church or Christian Ministry, and often has a Leadership Team made up of 8 key positions, although many groups start with only 2 or 3 leaders. Classic MOPS groups vary in size from 10 to 75 women. Classic MOPS groups usually meet twice a month during school terms, and provide childcare through the MOPPETS program.
2. Teen MOPS
MOPS Australia would like to provide a faith-based, supportive, nonjudgmental environment where teen mums can come together for support and encouragement. In Teen MOPS, the teaching, activities and friendships are all focused on the very distinct needs of teenage mums. Teen MOPS helps teen mums become more self-sufficient, confident, mature, giving and self-aware young women.
Teen MOPS groups can meet in public schools or community centres, as well as in churches, and meet twice a month for teaching and/or activities. All meetings encourage young mothers to voice their frustrations, fears and joys while their children are well taken care of in the MOPPETS program.
The Leadership Team of a Teen MOPS group are usually women who are not mothers of preschoolers.
3. Military MOPS
MOPS Australia is dedicated to meeting the needs of every mother of preschoolers. In order to attain this vision for mums who are either in the military themselves, or have a spouse in the military, MOPS Australia offers the Military MOPS program. A Military MOPS group is much like a Classic MOPS group, except that it is chartered by a base chaplaincy, either domestic or international. Because of the unique situations that Military MOPS groups face by being on a military base, MOPS Australia has designed this program with a great deal of flexibility.
Military MOPS groups usually meet once or twice a month, and provide childcare through the MOPPETS program. Much like our Classic MOPS groups, Military MOPS meetings vary in length, topics and meeting time, but typically include time for developing relationships through teaching, discussion groups, creative activities and fellowship time over a shared meal or snack.
Military MOPS groups often have a Leadership Team of 8 leaders, but may combine leadership positions for smaller group sizes.
4. MOPS@
MOPS Australia is dedicated to meeting the needs of every mother of preschoolers. Because MOPS Australia knows that many churches and Chartering Ministries may not have the resources or leadership necessary to run a Classic MOPS group, or may want to reach mums in a small-group format, MOPS Australia has developed the MOPS@ program.
The MOPS@ program, while keeping with the vision and purpose of MOPS Australia, is different from the Classic MOPS program in that it is made up of up to 12 mums and requires only 1 or 2 leaders. MOPS@ groups are very flexible in that they can meet virtually anywhere, such as in a home, at a local coffee shop, a community centre or in a workplace. The annual MOPS curriculum is included with the initial MOPS@ Charter and Charter Renewal. Because of the nature of the MOPS@ program, many MOPS@ groups may not include childcare and the structure of the meeting may be different.
