The shops are filled with tinsel. The kids are humming Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer (reindeer). Suddenly December is upon us, and the season of Advent is once again here. The word Advent comes from the Latin word adventus, which means coming.
What is coming up in December for you as a Leader? MOPS breakup parties. Saying goodbye to team members. Planning for next year. Clearing out craft cupboards. Wrapping up the year’s finances…
What is coming up in December for you as a Mum? Shopping. Paper chains. Older kids home from school. Extended family visiting. Play dates. Long to-do lists. Baking. Gift wrapping. Cleaning. More cleaning. Even more cleaning…
There is so much to do at this time of year, isn’t there? Advent isn’t meant to be a time of doing though, so much as a time of preparing for the coming.
What are you doing to prepare for the coming of the Christmas story this year? Advent Calendars might help our kids count down the sleeps, but what about preparing our own minds? Decorating our homes gets us all into the festive spirit, but what about preparing our own hearts?
I challenge you this December, to set aside some time amidst the doing to prepare for the coming.
Behold he comes
Riding on a cloud
Shining like the sun
At the trumpet’s call
Lift your voice
It’s the year of jubilee
Out of Zion’s hill salvation comes!
(Donnie McClurkin: Days of Elijah)
