Have you ever felt reallllly sad, mad, or just plain bad? Whether it was feeling terrible about yourself or overwhelmed with life. Perhaps you were extremely tired and you just couldn’t seem to change your mood for the better.
It is hard enough trying to manage our own emotions let alone trying to teach our children to manage theirs. Am I right?!
I remember when my first born was a toddler and the children’s entertainment group High 5 had a song about feelings. The chorus went like this:
Feelings go up. Feelings go down.
There’s lots of different feelings.
Spinning ’round and ’round and ’round
Sometimes they’re good.
Sometimes they’re bad.
But feelings are something
That everyone has.
I’ve never forgotten those lyrics!
I never hear people complain of being stuck in positive emotions, do you? Emotions become a struggle for us when they turn negative.
We need to remember that we are not our feelings; they are not in charge of us. It is also good to remember to do some ‘thinking’ to balance out the ‘feeling’ 😉. Some of us who are ‘feelers’ know just how hard that can be 😊.
Here are some ideas for moving our feelings from negative to positive, from bad to good.
Next time you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, ask yourself if what you are currently doing actually needs to be your focus right now.
Ascertain what it is that, if completed, would turn your day around. Break it into easy to achieve pieces and have a crack at it one piece at a time.
Negative thoughts about yourself
Feeling bad about yourself: write down what negative things you are saying to yourself, about yourself.
Write down 5 good qualities for every bad thing you are telling yourself.
Phone a good friend and get their perspective.
Focus on doing good for someone else instead of focusing on how popular or impressive you are.
Struggling with fatigue
What about being super tired? How do you manage that one when life seemingly won’t stop to let you rest?
Try for some fresh air; it’s always good to get some fresh air in your lungs. A brisk walk can help to wake you up.
Drink some water; it helps you to think clearly.
Take a short nap when you can.
Eat some real food, like a healthy snack.
And remember what High 5 said, feelings go up and feelings go down….
Tell yourself that this feeling will pass, because it will 😊.
Finally, take a deep breath in and let it out. Or as someone once said, everything will be ok in the end, and if it isn’t ok, it’s not the end.
